  1. what I find interesting about these paintings is how I feel and react when I see them, I find myself looking at some of the dull items in the painting to steer my eyes away from the obvious main subjects due to their seemingly sexual poses conflicting with the clear fact that they are children. I feel this was the reaction Balthus intended, it is as if the painting is daring to exist and is daring you to look.
